Morocco’s Government Council on Thursday, July 9, 2026, approved a draft decree introducing a new generation of biometric passports aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s travel documents while showcasing Morocco’s rich national identity.
Speaking at a press briefing following the Government Council meeting, the Delegate Minister in charge of Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesperson, Mustapha Baitas, said the draft decree, presented by the Minister of the Interior, is part of Morocco’s efforts to enhance the protection of its biometric passport through the adoption of next-generation security technologies.
According to Baitas, the new biometric passport reflects Morocco’s identity in all its diverse cultural and historical components while meeting the latest international standards for travel document security.
The approved decree sets out the procedures for implementing the new passport. Current biometric passports will remain valid until they expire or are gradually replaced by the new version.
Baitas also announced that a joint ministerial order issued by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will define the administrative procedures, requirements, and conditions for obtaining the new biometric passport.
