The participation of the Moroccan delegation in the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York provided an opportunity to reinforce the international momentum, driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, said Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita.
“Several countries, representing different continents, have joined this momentum of support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and for the Moroccan autonomy plan,” Mr. Bourita told reporters on the sidelines of the General Assembly session.
A solution that is “moving forward”
This situation shows that “the path toward a solution is continuing,” the minister said, noting that bilateral support for the national cause is now also being expressed at the multilateral level within the United Nations.
“This is important because it sends a strong signal on the eve of next month’s Security Council meetings, which are moving in this direction,” he added.
New support in Latin America and beyond
Referring to the various positions expressed or reiterated this week in favor of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the Moroccan autonomy plan, Mr. Bourita recalled that Peru decided to support Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and to open a consulate in Dakhla, while Bolivia reaffirmed its position in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and expressed its readiness to open a trade office in the Southern Provinces.
Chile, meanwhile, recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and expressed support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, the minister continued, adding that the Latin American country intends to strengthen its bilateral ties with Morocco in all areas on the basis of this new position.
He also cited Panama, which, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, reiterated its position in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and stated that its embassy in Rabat covers the entire Moroccan territory, including the Southern Provinces.
Revised positions in Africa and Europe
At the same time, Mr. Bourita said, the Republic of Mauritius has changed its position and now considers autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as “the most credible solution,” a stance also expressed by Jamaica.
Armenia also expressed support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, considering that this initiative “opens the way to strengthening the unity of the territory of the Kingdom of Morocco,” he specified, recalling the letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI by the Armenian Prime Minister, in which he underlines “the particular importance of the Moroccan Initiative concerning the Sahara.”
