International Atomic Energy Agency: Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to South-South Cooperation in Nuclear Safety

Morocco has reaffirmed its firm commitment to active South-South cooperation aimed at strengthening national capacities, particularly in the field of nuclear and radiological safety.

Speaking at the Board of Governors meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held from March 2 to 6 in Vienna, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, stressed the Kingdom’s determination to create new cooperation opportunities and promote mutual capacity-building, especially among developing countries.

Addressing agenda item 3 on “Nuclear and Radiological Safety,” the diplomat welcomed the report presented by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, which highlights Morocco’s commitment to international nuclear safety standards and outlines global trends and priorities for 2026.

Farhane commended the Agency’s continued efforts to maintain and strengthen nuclear, radiological, transport and waste safety, as well as emergency preparedness and response (EPR) capabilities, particularly in regions where needs are most pressing.

Reaffirming that responsibility for nuclear safety rests entirely with States, in line with their national obligations and international commitments, he underscored Morocco’s sustained efforts to modernize its regulatory framework and substantially update its national regulations in conformity with IAEA safety standards.

In this context, Morocco voluntarily hosted two IAEA peer review missions. The Emergency Preparedness Review (EPREV) mission praised the robustness of Morocco’s national framework for nuclear and radiological emergencies, identifying several good practices that go beyond IAEA safety requirements.

Similarly, the Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission highlighted the effective measures taken by Morocco to establish a coherent legal and regulatory framework in the field of nuclear and radiological safety.

Following these missions, Morocco expressed its readiness to share its experience with IAEA Member States, particularly regarding the organization, content and lessons learned from these review processes.

In conclusion, the Moroccan diplomat reaffirmed the Kingdom’s renewed commitment to sharing its expertise with African countries upon request, and to working with regional and international partners to strengthen the global nuclear safety regime and advance the objectives of the IAEA.
