Under Royal Instructions, Nationwide Mobilization to Face Loukkos Floods

Following the Royal instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Royal Armed Forces, alongside civil authorities at both regional and local levels, civil protection units, and all relevant stakeholders, have mobilized in a coordinated effort to confront the rising water levels of the Loukkos River, which partially flooded several neighborhoods in Ksar El Kebir.

In this framework, personnel from various agencies immediately began field operations to rescue citizens trapped by the floodwaters, evacuate and provide shelter to residents of affected homes, continue constructing sand barriers to protect at-risk neighborhoods, and prepare temporary accommodation centers.

In a statement to the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP), Brigadier General Hicham Jirawi, Deputy Commander of the Tangier–Larache Military Garrison, affirmed that, in line with the Royal instructions, specialized units in rescue, relief, logistical support, and medical assistance were deployed to support and assist affected populations in full coordination with local authorities on site.

In Ksar El Kebir, streets submerged in water witnessed continuous movement of heavy machinery capable of operating under these conditions, while civil protection boats ferried residents back and forth to evacuate as many people as possible from affected neighborhoods.

In the Houma Al-Toud district, south of the city, MAP observed civil protection units moving professionally and humanely through the alleys and homes to evacuate citizens and their belongings to safe areas.

Colonel Idriss Al-Aabbab, Regional Commander of Civil Protection, told MAP that evacuation operations covered several residential areas, with residents and their possessions transported using flat-bottomed metal boats to reach locations otherwise difficult to access, ensuring citizens’ safety during this exceptional situation.

Thanks to the combined efforts of all intervening parties, more than 20,000 people had been evacuated by Friday evening, according to Abdelaziz Farkli, Head of the Economic Affairs and Coordination Department at the Larache Provincial Authority and representative of the Regional Vigilance Committee.

The official noted that, following heavy rainfall leading to the Loukkos River surge, public authorities took all preventive measures upon receiving the weather warning bulletin.

In this context, the Regional Vigilance Committee, chaired by the Governor of Larache Province, carried out multiple field interventions, including inspecting flooded areas, evacuating residents, and providing temporary accommodation centers.

Residents interviewed by MAP praised the continuous mobilization of all relevant authorities, highlighting the deployment of human resources, machinery, and equipment to manage this exceptional climatic situation—a phenomenon that the city had not witnessed in nearly 35 years.
