The Spanish government approved on Tuesday the National Strategy to Combat Energy Poverty 2026-2030, a comprehensive framework designed to complement the national strategy against poverty and social exclusion, announced government spokesperson and Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, Elma Saiz.
Speaking after the Council of Ministers, Minister Saiz emphasized that the strategy aims to guarantee universal access to affordable, safe, and sustainable energy, recognized as a fundamental right and essential for a dignified life.
The strategy is intended as a holistic tool to reduce energy vulnerability and ensure equitable access to energy, prioritizing the most critical intervention areas. The roadmap was developed following a broad participatory process, including public consultations and discussions with social organizations, academia, and the private sector.
For the 2026-2030 period, authorities plan to shift from primarily short-term support to structural measures, providing long-term solutions for vulnerable consumers.
Key objectives include:
-
Implementing structural reforms to reduce energy poverty.
-
Strengthening consumer protection mechanisms for vulnerable households.
-
Improving knowledge and analytical tools to better understand and tackle energy poverty.
