The Kingdom of Belgium has reiterated its support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as the most appropriate, serious, credible and realistic basis for reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was expressed in Rabat by Maxime Prévot, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade, following his meeting with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.
The Belgian top diplomat stressed that this stance is in line with the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025. He also underlined the existential importance of this issue for the Kingdom of Morocco, firmly placing the Sahara region within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.
Maxime Prévot stated that Belgium intends to act accordingly at both the diplomatic and economic levels, in full respect of international law. In this regard, Belgium’s Ambassador to Rabat will soon be invited to visit the Sahara region to prepare and support several economic initiatives, including visits by Belgian companies and the organization of economic fairs led by the three regional agencies.
Regarding consular coverage for Belgian nationals residing in or traveling to the Sahara, Belgium reaffirmed that its Consulate General in Rabat is competent for the entire territory of Morocco, without regional distinction, including the Sahara region.
The visit reflects the positive momentum in relations between Morocco and Belgium, marked by regular political dialogue and a shared commitment to strengthening a strategic partnership based on mutual respect and convergence of views on issues of common interest.
