Morocco is harmonizing the model and dimensions of vehicle license plates used both within the country and abroad, following a decision issued by the Minister of Transport and Logistics.
The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) announced the measure following Decision No. 640.26, which amends and supplements Decision No. 2711.10 of September 29, 2010, concerning the registration of motor vehicles and trailers.
The decision was published on August 3, 2026, in Official Gazette No. 7531. It aims to address practical difficulties arising from differences between the license plate model used for international circulation and the model currently in force in Morocco.
A unified license plate model
The new regulation provides for the harmonization of the shape, dimensions and specifications of vehicle license plates, allowing a unified model to be used for both domestic and international circulation.
Existing license plates will not have to be replaced immediately in all cases.
For vehicles registered under the normal series and carrying plates without Latin characters, the existing plates may continue to be used until the first transfer of ownership, in accordance with the specifications applicable to circulation in Morocco.
For vehicles in the normal series used for international circulation and carrying Latin characters along with the Kingdom’s distinctive sign “MA” displayed separately from the plate, the existing plates will remain valid until December 31, 2026.
New model already applicable
NARSA states that the new unified model has been applicable since the publication of Decision No. 640.26. It concerns all vehicle registration operations involving vehicles purchased in Morocco or imported from abroad, whether new or used.
The agency has also called on all license plate manufacturers to comply strictly with the new provisions, particularly regarding the shape, dimensions and characteristics of the various components of the new plates.
In short, vehicle owners with existing plates do not necessarily have to replace them immediately. The new unified model mainly applies to new registration operations, with specific transitional rules for vehicles used in international circulation.
