Afreximbank is strengthening its regional structure with the appointment of five senior executives to strategic positions across Africa and the Caribbean. The move is aimed at accelerating business development, strengthening client engagement and supporting intra-African trade, industrialisation and regional integration.
Announced on August 31, 2026, from Cairo, the appointments cover several key African markets as well as the Caribbean. They reflect the African Export-Import Bank’s ambition to reinforce its operational presence and improve the execution of transactions across its various markets.
Eric Intong Monchu has been appointed Group Managing Director, responsible for Client Relations and Regional Operations, based at the Bank’s headquarters in Cairo. Having previously served in the position on an acting basis, he will be responsible for strengthening coordination between business development, client relationship management and transaction execution.
A strengthened regional operating structure
Kudakwashe Matereke has been appointed Director of Regional Operations for Anglophone West Africa, based in Abuja, Nigeria. Previously Regional Director for East Africa, he brings extensive experience in international trade finance, business development and client relationship management.
In Kampala, Uganda, Humphrey Nwugo has been appointed Director of Regional Operations for East Africa. Having previously held a similar position in Southern Africa, he will oversee the Bank’s regional operations, market coverage and client relationships across East Africa.
Peter Adeshola Olowononi has been appointed Director of Regional Operations for Southern Africa, based in Harare, Zimbabwe. He previously served as Director of Client Relations for Anglophone West Africa. His experience includes client relationship management, transaction origination and structuring, as well as regional business development.
Expanding the Bank’s Caribbean presence
Afreximbank is also strengthening its presence in the Caribbean with the appointment of Roy Reid as Director of Operations for its Caribbean Office in Bridgetown, Barbados, effective July 15, 2026.
A former senior adviser in the Office of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Roy Reid brings experience spanning government advisory services, financial services, investment management, financial technology and business development.
Through these appointments, Afreximbank aims to further integrate client relationship management, regional operations and transaction execution. The Bank is relying on executives with extensive knowledge of its markets and clients, most of whom have developed their careers within the institution.
According to George Elombi, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, the appointments demonstrate the Bank’s commitment to placing experienced leaders at the centre of its development mandate.
Accelerating trade and integration
The move comes as Afreximbank continues to play an increasingly important role in financing trade and promoting economic integration across Africa. The Bank supports the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the development of the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS).
As of December 2025, Afreximbank’s total assets and guarantees stood at approximately US$48.5 billion, while shareholders’ funds reached US$8.4 billion.
With its strengthened regional leadership team, the pan-African financial institution aims to expand market coverage, accelerate transaction execution and deepen engagement with companies, governments and other economic stakeholders.
Beyond an organisational adjustment, these appointments represent a strategic step aimed at supporting Afreximbank’s expansion and strengthening its role in transforming African trade, accelerating industrialisation and deepening economic integration across the continent.
