Trump expects negotiations with Tehran to resume this week

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he expects negotiations with Iran to resume this week, a day after rejecting a plan put forward by Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.

In a statement to US media outlet Axios, the White House occupant once again dismissed the conditions set by Tehran in its offer, saying the Iranians had “overestimated their cards.”

“They want to make a deal, but it’s not the deal I want to make,” “that’s what we might have accepted a year ago,” the US head of state said.

According to Axios, indirect discussions, mediated by Qatar, could take place as early as Monday, less than a week after indirect talks between US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on one side, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the other, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

On Saturday, Donald Trump announced he was rejecting Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying Iranian leaders wanted the deal because “they are badly losing.”

The Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s hydrocarbons passed before the war, lies at the heart of the conflict between the United States and Iran that erupted in late February. Since then, Tehran has claimed control of the strait, while Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in response.

After seven months of a war that is shaking the global economy, the two sides have still been unable to find a diplomatic way out.
