Pressure on Moroccan household budgets is not reflected in a uniform increase across all prices. Fuel nevertheless remains one of the main sources of pressure, with the price of diesel rising from around MAD 12.60 per liter in early July to more than MAD 15.30 by mid-September in Casablanca.
Recent price developments highlight significant differences across spending categories. While some food products have experienced more moderate changes, fuel-related expenses are placing increasing pressure on household budgets.
In Casablanca, the price of diesel rose by approximately MAD 2.70 per liter in just over two months, representing an increase of more than 20%. This directly affects motorists and indirectly impacts transport costs and activities that depend heavily on travel.
Different trends across household spending
The perception of a higher cost of living does not necessarily correspond to an identical increase across all prices. The impact on households depends on their spending patterns, particularly their consumption of fuel, food products and services.
This situation highlights the importance of looking beyond the overall inflation rate. Price changes affecting specific expenditure categories can have a significant impact on disposable household income, even when overall inflation remains more moderate.
