Artificial Intelligence: Antonio Guterres to Attend Global Summit in New Delhi

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in New Delhi to take part in the Global Summit on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence, his spokesperson announced in New York.

According to Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief will participate in the opening ceremony, a plenary session bringing together heads of state and government, and a session focused on the role of science in the international governance of AI.

On this occasion, Antonio Guterres is expected to stress the need for the international community to mobilize efforts to better understand both the potential and the risks associated with artificial intelligence. He will advocate for inclusive governance to ensure that this strategic technology is not controlled by only a limited number of governments, countries, or companies.

On the sidelines of the summit, the Secretary-General is scheduled to meet with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will also hold discussions with participating leaders, technology sector representatives, and members of the International Scientific Group on Artificial Intelligence.

Held in the Indian capital through Friday, the AI Impact Summit aims to serve as a global platform to debate the future of this technology and its governance, with particular attention to the priorities of the Global South. The discussions seek to move from dialogue to tangible impact and to promote the development of AI in support of inclusive and sustainable growth.

More than 700 sessions are scheduled over five days. They will address employment and skills development, AI system security, governance and ethical use, data protection, as well as India’s approach to sovereign AI, including the development of national foundational models for strategic sectors.
