Epstein Scandal Topples Norway’s Mona Juul from Diplomatic Post

Mona Juul, a senior Norwegian diplomat and currently Norway’s ambassador to Jordan (with accreditation to Iraq), resigned from her post on Sunday, February 8, 2026, following revelations about her connections to the Jeffrey Epstein case, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

The crisis emerged after documents linked to the Epstein case revealed that Juul had contacts with the convicted American financier, a central figure in a vast network of sexual trafficking and abuse. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide described the contacts as a “serious lapse in judgment,” making it difficult for Juul to continue in a high-level diplomatic role.

Aged 66, Mona Juul is a highly respected figure in Norwegian diplomacy, known for her key role in the secret negotiations leading to the Oslo Accords in the early 1990s. She previously served as Norway’s ambassador to the United Nations and in several foreign capitals before her appointment to Amman in 2024.

Her resignation follows a temporary suspension last week, after documents suggested that members of her family were mentioned in a will left by Epstein and raised questions about her husband, former diplomat Terje Rød-Larsen.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that an internal investigation will continue to determine the full extent of Juul’s contacts with Epstein and whether it affected her official duties. Until a successor is appointed, the Norwegian embassy in Amman will be headed by a chargé d’affaires.

This incident is part of a broader scandal, which has already implicated other Norwegian political figures following the recent publication of millions of documents related to Epstein’s international network.
