Geneva: Morocco Assumes Presidency of the Conference on Disarmament

Morocco is chairing, until March 13, the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, the United Nations’ sole multilateral forum mandated to negotiate disarmament treaties. The Kingdom is represented by its Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Omar Zniber.

This presidency highlights Morocco’s role as a committed actor in support of multilateralism, dialogue and collective security. It reflects the continuity of Moroccan diplomacy, guided by the High Orientations of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which places disarmament at the core of its international engagement.

The Conference’s work begins amid a challenging geopolitical context marked by rising tensions, deepening divisions among states and the erosion of confidence-building measures. Ongoing arms dynamics continue to weaken the foundations of the collective security system and complicate efforts to revive negotiations.

In this context, Morocco’s presidency aims to foster convergence, restore trust and promote inclusive dialogue. The objective is to revitalize the Conference so it can fully carry out its mandate and contribute to tangible progress in international peace and security.

A key milestone will be the High-Level Ministerial Segment, scheduled from February 23 to 25, under Morocco’s effective chairmanship. The event will bring together around forty high-level figures, including several foreign ministers and the UN Secretary-General, underscoring the importance of reinvigorating multilateral action on disarmament.

Through this responsibility, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to effective multilateralism based on shared responsibility and political will, in the service of a just and lasting peace.
