Green Hydrogen: Morocco Attracts Multibillion-Dollar Projects

Swiss developer H2 Global Energy is studying two projects in Morocco whose potential investment portfolio could reach approximately $3.6 billion. From Beni Mellal to Tangier, these initiatives reflect the growing scale of Morocco’s strategy in green hydrogen and renewable molecules, although these figures do not yet represent final or committed investments.

The project planned for Beni Mellal would be the larger of the two. It could include up to 1,300 megawatts of electrolysis capacity and produce between 220,000 and 281,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia per year. The potential investment is estimated at approximately $2.5 billion. In Tangier, the project would focus on the production of renewable hydrogen peroxide, with potential annual capacity of around 28,000 tonnes. The facility could rely on approximately 700 megawatts of solar and wind capacity, while its potential investment cost is estimated at around $1.1 billion.

From Renewable Electricity to Industrial Products

The strategic importance of these projects lies in their ability to transform renewable energy into marketable and exportable industrial products. Morocco has significant competitive advantages in this field thanks to its solar and wind resources, as well as its strong industrial base in chemicals and fertilizers. The choice of Beni Mellal also highlights the potential for developing new industrial hubs beyond the traditional coastal centers.

However, moving from project announcements to actual investment requires the completion of technical, economic and environmental studies, as well as securing financing and target markets. The cost of renewable electricity, water availability, transport and storage infrastructure, and certification requirements for green products will remain decisive factors.

For Morocco, the real challenge will not simply be to announce large production capacities, but to manufacture green molecules at competitive costs capable of accessing international markets.
