Ksar El Kébir: Joint Mobilization of the Royal Armed Forces and Civil Authorities to Face Flood Risks

The Royal Armed Forces (FAR), in close coordination with civil authorities, including provincial and local authorities, Civil Protection services and other stakeholders, are continuing a large-scale mobilization to address the risks resulting from the rising water levels of the Loukkos River, which has caused partial flooding in several neighborhoods of the city of Ksar El Kébir.

In a well-coordinated effort, human and logistical resources deployed on the ground have launched rescue operations to assist citizens trapped by floodwaters, evacuate and shelter residents from affected homes, continue the installation of sand barriers to protect threatened areas, and prepare and equip temporary accommodation centers.

In a statement to MAP, Colonel Major Hicham El Jiraoui, Delegate Commander of the Tangier–Larache garrison, stressed that, in accordance with the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, several specialized units in rescue operations, assistance, logistical support and medical intervention have been mobilized to provide aid and support to affected populations, in coordination with all local authorities present on the ground.

Ksar El Kébir is witnessing an intense deployment of heavy machinery and trucks capable of operating in flooded streets, while Civil Protection boats are increasing their rotations to evacuate as many citizens as possible from the affected neighborhoods.

In the Haoumat Taoud neighborhood, south of Ksar El Kébir, MAP observed the intervention of a Civil Protection unit operating with high professionalism and a strong humanitarian spirit, evacuating residents and their belongings through flooded alleys to safe areas.

In a similar statement to MAP, Lieutenant Colonel Driss Loabab, Provincial Commander of Civil Protection, said that, as part of ongoing field operations following the rise of the Loukkos River, Civil Protection teams carried out evacuation operations in several residential areas using flat-bottomed metal boats, enabling access to hard-to-reach zones and ensuring the safety of citizens in these exceptional circumstances.

Thanks to the sustained efforts of all stakeholders, more than 20,000 people had been evacuated by Friday evening, according to Abdelaziz El Ferkli, Head of the Economic Affairs and Coordination Department at the Larache Provincial Prefecture and representative of the Provincial Monitoring Committee.

He noted that public authorities had taken all proactive measures upon receiving the weather alert, adding that the Provincial Monitoring Committee, chaired by the Governor of Larache Province, conducted several field visits, supervised evacuation operations and made accommodation centers available to affected residents.

On site, several citizens expressed their appreciation, in statements to MAP, for the continuous mobilization of all concerned authorities and services in managing this exceptional climatic situation, described as unprecedented in the city for nearly 35 years.
