The Moroccan caftan was officially inscribed on Wednesday in New Delhi on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, during the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This decision recognizes the central place of this iconic traditional garment in Morocco’s history and cultural identity.
This international recognition highlights Morocco’s artistic genius, ancestral know-how, and the richness of its traditions. It crowns the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to preserve, promote, and pass on its cultural heritage, considered a key driver of social cohesion and sustainable development.
Passed down through generations, the caftan is far more than a garment. It embodies a living heritage where creativity, plural identity, and regional diversity converge. A symbol of elegance and refinement, it reflects the mastery of Moroccan artisans and the importance of skills transmitted within communities.
