Efforts deployed by the authorities have led to the reopening of 124 road sections out of a total of 168 damaged following recent severe weather conditions, while 44 sections remain closed to traffic to date, Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka said on Wednesday in Rabat.
Speaking at a press briefing following the Government Council meeting, Baraka specified that the affected regions include Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Fès-Meknès, Marrakech-Safi, Souss-Massa, Casablanca-Settat, Béni Mellal-Khénifra and the Oriental region.
Road closures were mainly caused by rising water levels, which affected 119 sections, as well as rockfalls and landslides impacting 49 sections. Several engineering structures, particularly in rural areas, also collapsed. A comprehensive assessment of the damage will be completed by Friday, the minister noted.
To address the situation, numerous emergency interventions were carried out to reopen affected roads, restore access to isolated areas and ensure traffic safety as quickly as possible. Studies will also be launched to rebuild the most severely damaged sections.
Baraka further reported the mobilization of 390 machines in the affected areas, including trucks, graders, loaders, excavators and bulldozers. A total of 572 engineers, technicians and machine operators have been deployed, with support from specialized companies to accelerate rehabilitation efforts.
