Storm Francis Hits Morocco: Meteorologist Explains What to Expect

As northern Morocco braces for the impact of the powerful Atlantic front named Francis, climatologist Saïd Karouk explained the meteorological mechanisms behind the event.

“What we are currently observing is an atmospheric phenomenon related to low-pressure systems and cold air masses coming from the north,” said Karouk.

According to him, these air masses detach from their original source and form what are known as cold drops.

The specialist notes that Storm Francis moves in a circular, counterclockwise pattern toward the Gulf of Cádiz, located between Tangier and Cádiz in Spain. “This system will carry polar cold air over the warmer oceanic air to the south, which could cause heavy rainfall across several northern regions of Morocco, accompanied by strong winds,” he added.

Karouk also emphasized that the intensity of precipitation will depend on the interactions between the storm’s cold air mass and the warmer air over Morocco and the Atlantic Ocean. This dynamic could generate significant rainfall and gusts, requiring particular caution for maritime navigation and outdoor activities.
