American entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the launch of an ambitious project to manufacture electronic chips dedicated to artificial intelligence, robotics, and data centers, including in space.
The new facility, named “Terafab,” will be built near the city of Austin in Texas. It aims to produce up to one terawatt of computing power annually—an immense capacity that, according to some industry experts, is comparable to the total electricity production of the United States.
The project will be carried out through a joint collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, both led by Elon Musk.
While the initial investment has not been officially disclosed, U.S. media reports estimate the cost to range between $20 billion and $25 billion.
Musk stated that the project is driven by the growing demand for computing power within Tesla and SpaceX, which is expected to exceed the capacity of current global chip suppliers.
In the long term, the project aims to produce chips capable of supporting between 100 and 200 gigawatts of computing power on Earth, and up to one terawatt in space.
No specific timeline has yet been announced for the implementation of this project.
