The United States launched large-scale military strikes against Iran on Saturday, announced President Donald Trump. This offensive marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, just hours after the failure of diplomatic negotiations held in Geneva.
In a video posted on his Truth Social network, the US president stated that the American army had carried out operations aimed at “eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime” in order to protect the American people.
An Offensive Named “Operation Epic Fury”
Several US media outlets indicate that this operation, named “Operation Epic Fury,” is expected to have a wider scope and longer duration than the strikes carried out last summer against Iranian nuclear facilities.
The US president said he intends to “wipe out” Iran’s missile industry and “destroy” its navy. He also urged members of the Iranian armed forces to lay down their weapons and called on the population to overthrow the regime that has been in power since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Failed Negotiations in Geneva
These US military strikes against Iran come just over a day after the end of talks between Washington and Tehran in Geneva, under Omani mediation. The talks aimed to defuse tensions related to Iran’s ballistic program and regional activities.
According to the US president, Iran refused to reach an agreement that could have prevented a military confrontation.
Risks of Regional Escalation
This new phase of military confrontation raises fears of a major regional escalation in the Middle East. The security, economic, and diplomatic consequences could be significant, particularly for global energy markets and regional stability.
Iranian authorities had not yet officially responded at the time of the announcement.
