Addis Ababa: Morocco Elected in First Round to AU Peace and Security Council

Morocco was elected on Wednesday in Addis Ababa, in the first round of voting, to serve a two-year term on the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU).

The Kingdom secured more than two-thirds of the votes (34 votes) during the election, which took place as part of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union.

Since its return to the African Union in 2017, Morocco has served twice on this body, for a two-year term (2018–2020) and a three-year term (2022–2025). During these mandates, Morocco contributed constructively to improving working methods and establishing best practices, in coordination with other PSC member states, within a responsible and inclusive approach.

The Peace and Security Council is the AU’s standing decision-making body responsible for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts across the continent.

Morocco is taking part in the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council with a delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

This session is being held ahead of the 39th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for February 14 and 15.
