Morocco–United States: Strategic Partnership Emerges to Boost Agronomic Research

Morocco and the United States are strengthening their agricultural cooperation following a meeting in Rabat between INRA Director Lamiae Ghaouti and North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, focusing on agronomic research, innovation, and sustainable development.

The meeting aimed to expand partnerships between Morocco’s National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA) and agricultural stakeholders from North Dakota. Discussions covered improving agricultural production systems, adapting to climate change, and enhancing natural resource management.

INRA officials presented their key research programs, highlighting efforts to develop resilient and efficient agricultural practices. Doug Goehring emphasized that the visit opens the door to concrete cooperation opportunities, particularly in agricultural innovation and knowledge exchange.

Both parties identified priority areas for collaboration, including the development of strategic crops such as barley and durum wheat, as well as conservation agriculture, where North Dakota has advanced expertise.

Lamiae Ghaouti noted that the visit strengthens Morocco–U.S. relations in agricultural research and development. She also announced a forthcoming visit by an INRA delegation to North Dakota to further develop these partnerships.

In addition, discussions explored opportunities in technology transfer, training, and capacity building to modernize the agricultural sector and improve resilience to climate challenges.
