As preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco is strengthening its presence in the United States by designating New Jersey as a key hub for both sporting readiness and diplomatic engagement. By selecting the Pingry School as the base camp for the Atlas Lions, the Kingdom is embedding its tournament strategy within a broader framework that blends sport, diplomacy, and decentralized cooperation.
During a visit to Basking Ridge, Morocco’s Ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, emphasized that this decision goes far beyond logistical considerations. Located about an hour from New York, the training facility offers world-class conditions that meet the highest international standards.
As part of his tour, Ambassador Amrani was received at the future training site by New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, alongside Alex Lasry. Their discussions highlighted a shared ambition to expand decentralized cooperation between Morocco and this key East Coast state, particularly in sports, industry, and technological innovation.
The ambassador underscored the symbolic power of football, describing it as “a bridge between societies” and a catalyst for international dialogue. He also pointed to the pivotal role of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and the Mohammed VI Football Academy in elevating Morocco’s footballing excellence and nurturing young talent.
For her part, Governor Sherrill praised the longstanding ties between Morocco and the United States and expressed her commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation. Wearing the Atlas Lions jersey, she welcomed Moroccan players and fans expected to attend in large numbers, especially for the highly anticipated match against Brazil at MetLife Stadium.
Scheduled for June 13, the match is expected to be one of the most watched fixtures of the group stage, with Morocco competing in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti. With over 10,000 Moroccans residing in New Jersey, the local diaspora is set to play a key role in creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere.
Earlier in the day, Ambassador Amrani toured the New York/New Jersey stadium facilities and held talks in New York with Ana María Archila to coordinate preparations for welcoming global supporters during the tournament.
Through this initiative, Morocco is positioning the 2026 World Cup as a platform to showcase its global outreach, leveraging sports diplomacy and deepening partnerships with key American stakeholders.
