Morocco Elected to the UN Economic and Social Council with Strong Member State Support

Morocco has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term following elections held at the UN headquarters in New York.

The Kingdom secured 178 votes out of the 187 member states present and voting, reflecting broad international support for its candidacy.

The election underscores the confidence placed by UN member states in Morocco’s commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development and international cooperation. It also highlights the Kingdom’s growing role in global efforts to address economic, social and environmental challenges.

Under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, Morocco has consistently advocated for an effective, inclusive and solidarity-based multilateral system grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter, dialogue among nations and collective responses to shared challenges.

Established by the UN Charter, ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It plays a central role in coordinating the economic, social and development-related activities of the UN system.

The Council oversees several key mechanisms, including the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the Humanitarian Affairs Segment and the Financing for Development Forum, all of which contribute to advancing the global sustainable development agenda.

Morocco regards ECOSOC as a vital institution for strengthening the coherence of the UN development system and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Through this new mandate, the Kingdom intends to leverage its national experience as well as its regional and international engagement to support sustainable and inclusive development efforts.

Morocco also plans to contribute actively to the Council’s work in areas such as sustainable development, financing for development, reform of the UN development system and South-South and triangular cooperation.

This election further strengthens Morocco’s presence within multilateral institutions and reinforces its role in international discussions on sustainable development and global governance.
