Morocco’s Atlas Lions kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 dream alive with a thrilling victory over the Netherlands, securing a place in the Round of 16 after winning 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time in Monterrey.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi opted to field the same starting XI that faced Brazil and Scotland, a decision that paid off as Morocco controlled much of the contest from the opening whistle.
The Atlas Lions dictated possession early on against a Dutch side content to sit deep and rely on counter-attacks. Despite the close marking of Saibari, Morocco created the better chances throughout the first half.
In the 20th minute, Neil El Aynaoui came close to opening the scoring with a powerful header from an Achraf Hakimi corner, only to be denied by an outstanding save from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Moments later, Hakimi tested the Dutch keeper again with a fierce strike that was tipped away.
Just before halftime, the Netherlands produced their best opportunity of the opening period, but Yassine Bounou made a crucial save to keep the score level.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Morocco dominating possession and creating chances while the Dutch remained compact in defense. Hakimi narrowly missed the target in a one-on-one situation, while Azzedine Ounahi repeatedly unlocked the opposition’s defense with incisive passes.
Against the run of play, Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead in the 72nd minute, leaving Morocco with an uphill battle.
The Atlas Lions responded with determination and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Issa Diop found the equalizer in the 91st minute, sending the match into extra time.
Morocco continued to press for a winner during the additional 30 minutes, with Soufiane Rahimi coming closest before Verbruggen once again produced a decisive save.
The tie was ultimately settled in a penalty shootout, where Morocco held their nerve to claim a 3-2 victory and book their place in the Round of 16.
The Atlas Lions will now face Canada on July 4 in Houston as they continue their quest for another memorable World Cup run.
