U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized a temporary suspension of certain anti-dumping and countervailing duties on phosphate fertilizers imported from Morocco, according to the White House.
The decision comes as American farmers face supply pressures linked to global fertilizer shortages, worsened by disruptions in international trade routes and production in key exporting regions.
The White House argues that global supply chains for phosphate fertilizers have been significantly disrupted in recent months due to geopolitical tensions and trade measures taken by major producing countries. In this context, U.S. domestic production is currently insufficient to fully meet agricultural demand, especially after accounting for exports.
To address this imbalance, the administration has declared an emergency situation, allowing the suspension of certain tariffs on Moroccan imports for a period of up to eight months, or until the emergency is lifted.
Officials also noted that while the government is working with the private sector to expand domestic fertilizer production capacity, these efforts will take time. In the meantime, suppliers such as Morocco are considered essential to ensure stable supply.
The measure is expected to reduce fertilizer costs for U.S. farmers and ease pressure on agricultural input prices in the short term.
