Togo is accelerating efforts to develop civil nuclear capabilities as President Faure Gnassingbé travels to London to attend the World Nuclear Symposium and promote financing for African nuclear projects.
The Togolese president is expected to address the World Nuclear Symposium as a guest of honour. The objective is to advocate greater access for African countries to the financing required to develop nuclear energy capabilities.
For Lomé, the issue forms part of a broader strategy aimed at diversifying the country’s energy mix and strengthening long-term energy security. Togo is seeking to develop the institutional and technical foundations required for a future nuclear programme.
A Long-Term Energy Strategy
Togo is working to structure its nuclear sector and strengthen its institutional and technical capacities. The interest in nuclear energy comes at a time when African countries are facing rapidly rising electricity demand, decarbonisation pressures and major financing challenges for large-scale energy infrastructure.
The Togolese programme remains at an early stage, however, and no final investment amount has yet been announced. The London summit is therefore expected to provide an opportunity for Lomé to engage with technology providers, investors and international institutions involved in the nuclear sector.
