The Ministry of Health and Social Protection confirmed on Monday the detection of two limited family clusters of diphtheria in the Souss-Massa region, specifying that one case is biologically confirmed and that eight other cases are under investigation, two of which have resulted in death.
Two clusters identified in Agadir Ida-Outanane and Chtouka-Aït Baha
According to information released by the health department, these clusters were identified in Agadir Ida-Outanane prefecture and Chtouka-Aït Baha province.
To date, only one diphtheria case has been biologically confirmed by the regional health authority. Eight other suspected cases are undergoing epidemiological investigation and biological confirmation, including two deaths.
The ministry described the situation as contained, emphasizing the limited nature of these family clusters.
Health response measures activated
In response to this localized resurgence, health authorities have activated a response plan including:
- Clinical management of suspected and confirmed cases in appropriate health facilities.
- In-depth epidemiological investigation around the detected clusters.
- Prophylaxis measures (preventive treatment and follow-up) for close contacts of patients.
- Strengthened epidemiological surveillance in the affected area.
These actions aim to quickly contain transmission and prevent any spread of the clusters.
A vaccine-preventable disease
Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection, transmitted via the respiratory route, which can cause severe complications (cardiac, neurological, respiratory) and, in some cases, death.
Long considered a disease of the past in Morocco, it had nearly disappeared thanks to high vaccination coverage under the national immunization program. In recent years, however, health professionals have warned of a decline in vaccination coverage in some areas, a risk factor for the re-emergence of vaccine-preventable diseases such as diphtheria.
The ministry stressed that vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against this disease and called on citizens, especially parents, to ensure compliance with the vaccination schedule for their children.
Context of heightened vigilance
This announcement comes amid enhanced health vigilance around vaccine-preventable diseases. Morocco has conducted several national and regional vaccination campaigns in recent months, notably as part of World Immunization Week, under the slogan: “We love our children, with vaccination, we protect them.”
Health authorities insist on the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage to prevent any epidemic resurgence and protect the most vulnerable age groups, particularly young children.
