U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Ukraine to move swiftly toward negotiating a peace agreement with Russia, ahead of a new round of talks scheduled in Geneva.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington after a weekend at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, the U.S. president said Kyiv “should come to the negotiating table, and quickly.”
Last week, Trump had already urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accelerate the process, stating that Moscow was willing to “make a deal.”
The negotiations are based on a U.S. plan unveiled several months ago. At the heart of the discussions is the possibility of territorial concessions by Kyiv in exchange for Western security guarantees.
A new round of talks bringing together Russian, Ukrainian, and American representatives is set to take place Tuesday and Wednesday in the Swiss city, in an effort to reach a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
In recent weeks, two rounds of direct negotiations were held in Abu Dhabi, but they failed to produce any significant breakthrough. Talks remain stalled, particularly over the issue of a potential territorial settlement between Kyiv and Moscow.
