US President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would be “opened soon”, as maritime traffic remains restricted due to escalating tensions with Iran.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One for a trip to Virginia, he stressed that the United States was ready to act to ensure freedom of navigation. “We will open the Gulf, with or without them,” he said, referring to Iranian authorities.
He added that the reopening of the strategic waterway was inevitable, arguing that Tehran cannot sustain restrictions without suffering major economic consequences.
Earlier in the day, Donald Trump warned that Washington could launch new strikes against Iran if ongoing talks fail.
US Vice President JD Vance traveled to Islamabad to lead the American delegation in negotiations with Tehran. Before departure, he cautioned Iran against attempting to mislead Washington, while expressing hope for constructive talks.
Discussions are expected to focus on Iran’s enriched uranium, ballistic missile program, sanctions relief and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran, for its part, is pushing for control over the strait, the introduction of tolls for passing vessels, an end to military operations in the region and the lifting of sanctions.
