US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran could result in an agreement as early as this weekend, expressing optimism about the progress of the talks while acknowledging that uncertainties remain.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump described the discussions as moving forward positively and said a breakthrough could be reached in the coming days.
At the same time, the US president noted that the outcome of the negotiations remains uncertain, stressing that developments involving Iran can be difficult to predict.
Trump also reiterated his position on regional issues, particularly regarding Lebanon, stating that he prefers to keep discussions concerning Lebanon separate from the broader negotiations with Tehran, a stance that differs from Iran’s approach.
Addressing recent tensions in the Middle East, Trump said the United States had quickly responded to actions attributed to Iran in the region and had managed to contain the situation.
He further reaffirmed Washington’s position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, insisting that the United States would never allow Tehran to obtain a nuclear weapon.
The comments came after US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces had intercepted several Iranian ballistic missiles and drones and carried out what it described as self-defense strikes against targets on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to CENTCOM, missiles launched toward Kuwait and Bahrain were intercepted before reaching their targets through coordinated operations involving US and allied air defense systems.
The latest developments unfold amid heightened tensions across the Middle East as diplomatic efforts continue alongside ongoing security concerns surrounding Iran’s regional activities and nuclear program.
