Donald Trump Promises $5,000 “Dividend” to American Adults if Republicans Retain Control of Congress

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday promised to pay a $5,000 “dividend” to every adult American citizen if Republicans retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate following the midterm elections scheduled for November.

“Here is my promise: if Republicans win both the House and the Senate, thanks to our economic successes (…), I will issue a $5,000 dividend to every adult citizen of the United States,” Trump said to applause from Republicans gathered in Dallas, Texas, for an unprecedented party convention.

The president did not provide details on how the measure would be implemented, including whether it would require congressional authorization or how it would be funded.

He nevertheless specified that the money distributed would have to be spent in the United States.

The announcement came nearly an hour into Trump’s speech at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, which was organized to mobilize Republican voters ahead of the November 3 elections.

It is the first time Republicans have held such a convention ahead of the midterm elections, as national party conventions are traditionally reserved for presidential election years.

The two-day convention aims in particular to highlight the Republican administration’s record and strengthen voter mobilization.

Among members of the US administration, Attorney General Todd Blanche and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed the gathering on Wednesday. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak Thursday, before President Donald Trump delivers the convention’s closing speech.

Less than two months before the elections, Republicans are facing closely contested races for both the House and Senate, amid concerns over the cost of living and the state of the US economy.
