Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced on Tuesday in New York Morocco’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028–2029 term.

In his address to the general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly, Mr. Bourita said the candidacy reflects the Kingdom’s firm determination to contribute effectively and responsibly to the maintenance of international peace and security.

He described the bid as grounded in a “realistic and solidarity-based” vision of international cooperation, in strict compliance with international law and the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

According to Mr. Bourita, the candidacy builds on Morocco’s long-standing diplomatic experience and on the enlightened vision of King Mohammed VI to position the country as a reliable actor promoting stability and sustainable development worldwide.

He added that the move would allow Morocco to continue serving peace, strengthen collective security and firmly defend multilateral action in line with the UN Charter.

Mr. Bourita said the candidacy crowns Morocco’s tangible and continuous contributions to the three pillars of the international system: international peace and security, sustainable development and the primacy of the rule of law.
