The FIFA Council held a meeting on Wednesday in Rabat that was described as “positive and constructive,” with the organisation’s leadership reaffirming its support for President Gianni Infantino.
According to a FIFA statement, the Secretary General and several members of the FIFA Council expressed their full backing for Infantino, who remains the only elected FIFA official chosen by the organisation’s 211 member associations.
For his part, the FIFA President reiterated his full support for the Secretary General and the FIFA administration, thanking them for their efforts in implementing his vision for the development of football worldwide.
The meeting also addressed ways to improve coordination, communication and interaction between the FIFA President, the Secretary General and the FIFA Council in order to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in carrying out the organisation’s objectives.
FIFA leadership praised the work of the administration in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the success of the tournament relies on unity and teamwork between the President, the Secretary General and the entire FIFA administration.
The meeting also focused on the controversy surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal. FIFA acknowledged that mistakes had been made during the process and after the proposal was disclosed in the media.
The organisation clarified that there was no intention to exclude the FIFA Council or member associations from the decision-making process, while admitting that the matter should have been handled differently.
FIFA said separate letters of apology had been sent to the Council and member associations, along with a commitment that similar situations would not happen again.
The facts surrounding the matter will be reviewed, after which a report will be submitted to the FIFA Council at its next meeting.
FIFA also confirmed that the FFE proposal has been withdrawn and stressed that it would take all necessary measures to protect the organisation’s integrity, reputation and commitment to good governance.
The governing body concluded by reaffirming its mission to continue developing football around the world through the FIFA Forward programme, benefiting its 211 member associations, confederations and regional organisations.
