UN Secretary-General António Guterres received Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, in New York as part of Morocco’s presidency of the Peacebuilding Commission.
During the meeting, the Moroccan diplomat presented an overview of the initiatives led by the Kingdom, emphasizing concrete results achieved on the ground in post-conflict stabilization efforts.
He highlighted the Commission’s growing impact, particularly in Africa, where several countries benefit from its support. Among them, progress in the Central African Republic was cited as a clear example of the UN’s role in fostering sustainable peace.
Hilale also underlined the strong link between peace and development, stressing the importance of financing and international partnerships. He referred in particular to discussions with the World Bank to support projects implemented by the Commission.
In this context, two major events were announced under Morocco’s presidency. The first is scheduled for June 22, 2026, during the Commission’s annual session, focusing on partnerships for peacebuilding. The second, at ministerial level, will take place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, under the chairmanship of Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita.
Reacting to these initiatives, António Guterres described them as “priorities” on the UN agenda and praised Morocco’s strong commitment to peacebuilding.
He also pointed to the tangible impact of the Commission’s work in several African countries affected by crises, noting improvements across key sectors including development, healthcare, agriculture and institutional strengthening.
Finally, the UN chief asked Hilale to convey his respectful greetings to HM King Mohammed VI.
