Tanzania is seeking to strengthen its position in the global graphite industry. Graphite has become a strategic mineral in the energy transition and is a key component of lithium-ion battery anodes. InVert Graphite’s Morogoro project illustrates a new generation of African mining ventures that are moving beyond extraction to explore processing, battery-grade materials and greater integration into the value chain.
InVert Graphite wholly owns the Morogoro Graphite Project in Tanzania and is currently conducting exploration activities across several areas of the project. In the Kumba area, the company has reported high total graphitic carbon grades, with some trench sampling results reaching 31.4% TGC. Based on these exploration results, the company has launched an initial 1,300-metre reverse-circulation drilling programme to further assess the extent, continuity and potential of the mineralisation. These activities are expected to provide a stronger geological basis for future project development and economic assessment.
More importantly, InVert’s strategy is increasingly moving from mining towards downstream processing. In June 2026, the company announced the acquisition of RapidGraphite and exclusive access to RapidPulse graphite-processing technology, developed in collaboration with Curtin University in Australia. Initial testing of graphite samples from the Morogoro project reportedly achieved approximately 99% purity, while also improving graphite crystallinity. The technology is designed to produce high-purity graphite suitable for battery applications and could reduce reliance on conventional acid-based purification processes. The company has also secured A$2.5 million in funding commitments to continue testing and pre-pilot work.
This strategy is particularly important for Tanzania and Africa as a whole. Graphite is an essential material for lithium-ion battery anodes, which are widely used in electric vehicles and energy-storage systems. The real economic value of the future will therefore depend not only on the possession of mineral resources, but also on the ability to transform them into higher-value industrial materials. By combining Tanzanian graphite resources with advanced processing technology, InVert is attempting to build a more integrated supply chain. If successful, the strategy could help Tanzania move from being primarily a mineral supplier towards becoming a participant in battery-material processing and the broader clean-energy value chain.
