UN Forum on Forests: Morocco strengthens its role in international negotiations

Morocco played an active role in the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, held in New York from May 11 to 15, 2026, by contributing to several negotiation and consultation sessions involving member states.

In a statement, the National Agency for Water and Forests said that its Director General, Abderrahim Houmy, facilitated several discussions on behalf of the Kingdom in his capacity as Vice-Chair of the Bureau of the United Nations Forum on Forests. His participation helped support dialogue between delegations and international partners.

Morocco notably acted as a mediator to help bridge differences between the various parties and contribute to reaching consensus on the final resolution adopted during the session.

The adopted text focuses on accelerating the implementation of the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests, achieving the Global Forest Goals by 2030, and strengthening financing mechanisms, international cooperation and technology transfer in the forestry sector.

The agency also stressed that the resolution recognizes Morocco’s initiatives in several areas related to sustainable forest management, particularly community-based management, technological innovation and sustainable financing models. This recognition further consolidates the Kingdom’s position as a committed player in environmental issues on the international stage.

Through this participation, the National Agency for Water and Forests reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international partnerships and contributing to global sustainable development and ecosystem preservation goals.

In May 2024, Morocco, represented by Abderrahim Houmy, was elected as a member of the Bureau of the United Nations Forum on Forests representing the African continent for the 2024-2026 term. The appointment reflected the confidence placed in the Kingdom within UN bodies and confirmed Morocco’s growing role in environmental and sustainable natural resource management policies.

The session took place amid mounting global environmental challenges, including climate change impacts, land degradation, biodiversity loss and increasing pressure on forest ecosystems.

Created in 2000 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the United Nations Forum on Forests works to promote the conservation, management and sustainable development of forests worldwide.
