World Cup 2026 sets new all-time attendance record

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has made history by becoming the most-attended edition of the tournament ever, surpassing the attendance record set during the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

The milestone was reached during the match between Ecuador and Germany at New York New Jersey Stadium, where total attendance officially exceeded the previous record of 3,587,538 spectators.

To mark the occasion, FIFA honored the tournament’s 3,587,539th spectator on the pitch alongside former Germany international Sami Khedira. The announcement was made in front of the crowd, highlighting a landmark moment in World Cup history.

Beyond the symbolic achievement, the new record reflects the tournament’s expanded format. With more participating teams and additional matches played across multiple host cities, the 2026 edition has significantly increased overall stadium capacity while extending the competition’s global reach.

The revamped format has also helped attract larger audiences, boost economic activity across host regions, and strengthen football’s international footprint.

For FIFA, the record confirms the success of its strategy to expand the World Cup and broaden the tournament’s worldwide appeal.
