Morocco is taking a major step forward in its ambition to become a global hub for electric vehicle battery production with the launch of Africa’s first integrated battery manufacturing plant.
Located in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region and developed by Gotion High-Tech, this landmark project is one of the largest industrial investments ever undertaken in the Kingdom. It reflects Morocco’s commitment to strengthening its industrial sovereignty, accelerating the green transition, and positioning itself as a strategic manufacturing and export platform for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
The project’s first phase will deliver an annual production capacity of 10 GWh of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, primarily intended for electric vehicles. Over time, the factory is expected to expand its capacity to 100 GWh, placing Morocco among the world’s leading battery producers and enabling it to meet the rapidly growing global demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
This strategic investment is built on Morocco’s key competitive advantages, including political and economic stability, an attractive investment climate, a well-established automotive industry, free trade agreements providing access to markets of more than 2.5 billion consumers, close proximity to Europe, and world-class logistics infrastructure. In addition, Morocco’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector will enable the production of low-carbon batteries, further enhancing the country’s competitiveness.
The project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, facilitate technology transfer, and foster the emergence of a fully integrated battery ecosystem covering active materials, electronic components, battery recycling, and specialized industrial services. It will significantly strengthen Morocco’s position within the global electric vehicle value chain.
This gigafactory represents a new chapter in Morocco’s industrial development, moving beyond vehicle assembly into the production of high-value-added components that are essential to the future of electric mobility. Combined with investments in cathode materials, chemical precursors, and the Kingdom’s abundant phosphate resources, the project lays the foundation for a new generation of advanced industries.
By becoming the first African country to host an integrated electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant, Morocco confirms its ambition to emerge as a global leader in clean technologies and a strategic partner in the worldwide transition toward a greener economy and sustainable transportation.
