December 31, 2026 is not a general deadline requiring all vehicles currently in circulation in Morocco to replace their registration plates, the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) said on Friday, September 4.
The clarification comes after inaccurate information circulated claiming that all vehicle owners would be required to replace their registration plates before the end of 2026.
NARSA recalled that Decision No. 640.26, published on August 3, provides transitional provisions determining when plate replacement becomes mandatory, depending on the vehicle’s situation.
Plates Without Latin Characters Remain Valid
For vehicles registered under the standard series and fitted with plates without Latin characters, used for circulation within Morocco, there is no general requirement to replace them before December 31, 2026.
These plates remain valid until the vehicle’s first ownership transfer.
December 31, 2026 Deadline for Certain International Plates
Vehicles registered under the standard series and carrying plates intended for international circulation, featuring Latin characters as well as Morocco’s distinguishing sign “MA” displayed separately from the plate, are subject to a specific deadline.
These plates will remain valid until December 31, 2026.
NARSA Urges Drivers to Rely on Official Sources
Amid various interpretations and claims circulating online, NARSA urged road users to rely on official sources to avoid confusion regarding the new regulations.
Contrary to some widely circulated claims, not all vehicle owners in Morocco are required to replace their registration plates before December 31, 2026. The requirement depends on the type of plate and the specific situation of the vehicle.
Drivers are therefore encouraged to check the provisions of Decision No. 640.26 before taking any action.
