Morocco Joins Artemis Accords, Expanding Strategic Partnership with the United States into Space

Morocco’s signing of the Artemis Accords marks a significant step in strengthening its strategic ties with the United States, highlighting the durability of their alliance and its expansion into the space sector.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the U.S. Department of State welcomed Morocco’s accession, emphasizing that it reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to responsible, peaceful, and cooperative space exploration. The move places Morocco among a growing group of nations actively contributing to the global governance of outer space.

The Artemis Accords, launched in 2020 by the United States and a group of partner countries, establish a framework of principles to guide civil space activities. These include transparency among nations, the sharing of scientific data, mutual assistance in emergencies, and adherence to international law, particularly regarding the use of space resources.

By becoming the 64th signatory, Morocco reaffirms its dedication to the peaceful and sustainable use of outer space. The agreement was signed in Rabat by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita, in the presence of U.S. Under Secretary of State Christopher Landau and U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan III, according to the State Department.

This accession also reflects Morocco’s ambition to position itself within major global technological and scientific developments, while further consolidating its partnership with the United States in high-value strategic sectors.
