Tan-Tan Could Host a New Titanium Industry

The development of mineral-rich black sands in the Tan-Tan area could pave the way for a new mining and industrial value chain in Morocco, supported by Canadian company Steadright.

The project represents a new initiative along Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Steadright holds an initial license covering 16 square kilometers between Tan-Tan and Tarfaya, where it intends to assess the potential of black sands rich in titaniferous minerals.

The first phase is expected to focus on titanium-bearing sand extraction, followed by the possible development of a beneficiation facility near Tan-Tan. Such a model could allow Morocco to explore the creation of a domestic titanium value chain, given the metal’s importance for several advanced industrial and technological applications.

The project’s significance goes beyond mining. Local processing could help create new industrial activities, attract additional investment and diversify the economic base of the Tan-Tan region.

Local Processing at the Heart of the Project

The main objective is to move beyond the extraction of raw materials and establish an integrated industrial value chain capable of retaining a larger share of value within Morocco while developing specialized skills.

However, the project will also have to address significant environmental considerations because of its coastal location. Any extraction and processing activities will therefore need to comply with requirements related to coastal protection and environmental management.

For Morocco, the challenge goes beyond identifying a new mineral resource. It involves determining the economic, industrial and environmental conditions required to transform this potential resource into an integrated industrial sector.

If initial exploration confirms significant economic potential, Tan-Tan could become a new hub for mining activity and contribute to strengthening Morocco’s position in value chains linked to critical minerals and strategic materials.
