U.S. Embassy in Rabat Celebrates 250 Years of American Independence and Enduring Partnership with Morocco

The U.S. Embassy in Rabat celebrated the 250th anniversary of American independence during its annual Independence Day reception, held for the first time at the historic Chellah site in Rabat.

The event brought together senior Moroccan officials, diplomats, and partners from both the public and private sectors, highlighting nearly 250 years of friendship and cooperation between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.

As the first country to recognize the independence of the United States, Morocco played a pivotal role in establishing one of America’s longest-standing diplomatic relationships. The celebration underscored the strength of the bilateral partnership across diplomacy, security, trade, and investment, while also showcasing growing cooperation in innovation, infrastructure, and economic development.

The Embassy also highlighted the enduring American presence in Morocco, from the American Legation in Tangier—the oldest U.S. diplomatic property in the world—to the recent inauguration of the new U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca, reflecting a shared commitment to future-oriented cooperation.

Speaking at the event, U.S. Ambassador Richard Duke Buchan III emphasized that the 250th anniversary of the United States offers an opportunity to celebrate “a partnership rooted in history, strengthened by trust, and firmly focused on the next 250 years.”

He added that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening economic and people-to-people ties, including efforts that support the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to position the Moroccan Sahara as a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunity.

The celebration also coincides with Morocco’s participation in the FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, providing another powerful example of the human connections that continue to strengthen relations between the two nations.

The evening concluded with a spectacular fireworks and drone show, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the United States and Morocco and a shared vision for the future.
