Twenty-six people were killed and 2,803 others injured, including 125 seriously, in 1,975 traffic accidents recorded in urban areas during the week of August 24 to 30, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
According to data released by the DGSN, these accidents were mainly caused by driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, and speeding. Pedestrian inattention, failure to maintain a safe following distance, and loss of vehicle control were also among the main causes identified.
Security services also reported accidents linked to changing direction without using turn signals, unauthorized changes of direction, failure to stop at stop signs, driving the wrong way or on the left-hand side of the road, as well as running red lights.
Driving under the influence of alcohol and improper overtaking were also identified among the behaviors contributing to these accidents.
Regarding traffic law enforcement and the crackdown on road code violations, security services recorded 52,052 traffic offenses during the same period. A total of 7,702 reports were drawn up and referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, while 44,350 fixed fines were collected.
The total amount collected from these violations reached 9,691,575 dirhams, the DGSN said.
The enforcement operations also resulted in 5,434 vehicles being impounded by municipal authorities, 7,702 documents being seized, and 391 vehicles being taken off the road.
These figures highlight the scale of road accidents in urban areas and the intensification of enforcement operations carried out by security services to combat dangerous behavior on public roads.
