Moroccan Sahara: European Union Backs Autonomy Plan Under Moroccan Sovereignty

A strong diplomatic signal in support of Morocco. The European Union reaffirmed on Thursday in Rabat its backing of the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom as a solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

During an official visit to Morocco, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that “a genuine autonomy could represent one of the most realistic solutions” to achieving a definitive settlement of the issue.

Speaking after talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, the European official emphasized that the EU’s position calls on all parties to engage in discussions without preconditions, on the basis of Morocco’s autonomy initiative.

This shared position was formalized in a statement issued following the meeting, reflecting a consensus among the 27 EU Member States. The document also welcomed Morocco’s willingness to further clarify how autonomy under its sovereignty would be implemented.

Furthermore, the EU praised the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his Personal Envoy to advance the political process.

This position comes ahead of an upcoming UN Security Council meeting on the issue, reinforcing growing international momentum in favor of Morocco’s proposal. Several European countries have already expressed, at the national level, clear support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and for the autonomy plan.

Driven by the leadership of Mohammed VI, this diplomatic dynamic reflects an emerging international consensus toward a lasting political solution based on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
