U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland granting the United States “permanent control” over the security of the Arctic territory.
The agreement also gives the United States permanent control over “all other needs in Greenland,” thereby fully addressing what he described as Washington’s numerous concerns, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“Under my leadership, we have worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to ensure that the United States will ALWAYS have the full ability to act as it should in Greenland to ensure and defend the security of Greenland and that of the United States of America,” the U.S. president added.
Trump also said the agreement is specifically intended to prevent any U.S. “adversary” from establishing a military presence in Greenland or making sensitive investments there.
“From now on, no adversary of the United States will EVER be able to establish a military base or presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments there, without our express written authorization,” he stated.
According to U.S. media reports, the United States plans to immediately expand its military presence in several “appropriate areas” of the Arctic island.
The increased U.S. control is part of the administration’s plans to deploy the “Golden Dome,” a large-scale missile defense system intended to protect U.S. territory.
