Trump ready to meet Xi Jinping and Putin in China to discuss denuclearization

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is ready to take part in a trilateral summit with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin in China next November, to discuss prospects for “denuclearization.”

“If President Xi wants it, I’ll do it,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that the potential meeting would be “devoted to denuclearization.”

The US president, however, stressed that the trilateral summit, if it materializes, would not focus exclusively on the conflict in Ukraine.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that President Putin had proposed that his American and Chinese counterparts meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled for November 18-19 in Shenzhen, China.

The proposal comes as diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the war in Ukraine continue to struggle to produce results.

In early October, Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart. Following the call, the US president announced an agreement between Washington and Moscow for the purchase of Russian diesel, before signing an executive order exempting Russia from new US sanctions.
